Trying to discover my true passion…any suggestions?
I have a great job!
But I don’t know what my passion is.
I want to truly discover what my true passion is so that I can work wholeheartedly towards making that my occupation.
I read a book by a man named Gary Vaynerchuk about monetizing your passions. This book seemed primarily aimed at people who like to talk about their topic but was still very helpful. I have never been much for talking. If given a choice between telling people how good I am at what I do, or showing people how good I do it, every time I will choose to let my work speak for me.
I come from a background of letting good work speak for itself. For as long as I can remember my father ran a Tree Surgery business on the side with my brother and I. He never spent a dime on advertising or marketing, but we were never seemed to run out of work.
The secret…We just did good work.
Often my dad would provide free advice about all manor of lawn care while were on the property. Noticing a girdling root or a thinning shrub and diagnosing the problem before the tree or bush had to be removed saved countless innocent trees all around the finger lakes region. Our attention to detail and personal touch provided all the free advertising and marketing we needed.
Although I greatly prefer action to discussion, I do understand the importance in social networking in today’s society. As my Dad had a good customer base through word-of-mouth advertising, the extent of his reach was narrowly restricted to within specific neighborhoods. Using the tools available to me today, and assuming anyone finds my ramblings interesting, I hope to develop my “personal brand” until I figure out what it is I want to spend the rest of my life occupying my time with.
